What Happens at 21 DTE? Why Option Sellers Watch

Twenty-one days to expiration is not a law of options pricing. It is a practical management checkpoint because the trade's risk mix changes as expiration gets closer.

Educational framework only. Options involve risk and are not suitable for all investors. For standardized options mechanics and risks, see FINRA, OCC/OIC and Cboe educational materials.

Nothing magical happens on day 21

Option Greeks change continuously. There is no cliff at exactly 21 DTE. Traders use the date as a repeatable checkpoint so management decisions are made by rule rather than by emotion.

Gamma becomes more important near expiration

As expiration approaches, delta can change more quickly when the underlying moves, especially when the option is near the strike. For short options, that can cause a position that looked modestly directional to become much more sensitive very quickly.

Theta is not free

Time decay generally accelerates as expiration approaches, which sounds attractive to sellers. But the remaining premium is compensation for the remaining risk. Collecting the final small portion of credit may require carrying increasingly concentrated gamma and event exposure.

Assignment becomes more relevant

American-style equity options can be exercised before expiration. Early assignment is not limited to the final three weeks, but as extrinsic value shrinks and an option moves in the money, assignment planning becomes increasingly important.

A management checkpoint

At a time threshold such as 21 DTE, a seller can ask: How much of the original credit has been captured? How much risk remains? Is there an earnings or macro event ahead? Would I accept assignment? Is the capital better deployed elsewhere?

Use a rule, not a superstition

Some systems close or roll at a fixed DTE; others combine DTE with profit percentage and portfolio regime. The useful idea is not '21 is optimal.' The useful idea is to define a point where remaining reward must justify the changing risk.
